What are superfoods?
Superfoods are any type of food that is nutritionally dense and good for your health. They contain plenty of nutrients, antioxidants and many contain healthy fats, fibre and phytochemicals (plant chemicals that have many health benefits).
Some common Australian superfoods include blueberries, which contain heaps of vitamins, soluble fibre and phytochemicals and dark leafy greens like kale which are packed with vitamins A, C and K.
There are also newly popular superfoods like organic incaberries and goji berries which are very high in antioxidants, fibre, and other vitamins and minerals.
Superfood powders have become a popular way to consume nutrient dense superfoods. By adding it to your smoothie, salad or even coffee, they’re a great way to increase nutrients in your diet.
What are some organic seaweed benefits?
We like to call seaweed the vegetable of the sea, and like their land counterparts, they have many health benefits. They’re packed with antioxidants and are an excellent source of iodine.
Another seaweed benefit is that they’re a reliable form of omega-3 fatty acids for vegetarians and vegans.
How do you introduce superfoods and seaweed into your diet?
Most people think of nori sheets to make sushi but there are plenty of other varieties that you can use in your cooking. You could add some Arame to an Asian stir fry, make a spinach lasagne from Tasmanian Wakame (a type of kelp seaweed), or have a delicious seaweed snack
When it comes to Australian superfoods, you could try adding some organic bee pollen to your muesli or yoghurt. This superfood is popular for assisting in immune system function and contains minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and amino acids.
Instead of baking with cocoa, you could use organic cacao powder instead. It’s a substantial source of phytonutrients, beta-carotene, vitamin C and various amino acids.
There are so many wonderful recipes that highlight superfoods. How about a layered black sapote & soursop chia mousse? Or a refreshing superfood green smoothie? Yes, please!
