Your questions answered about all things nuts and seeds
Which nuts are best for you?
Nuts are bite-sized nutritional powerhouses, packed with vitamins, minerals, proteins and heart-healthy, monounsaturated fats.
Take almonds. Rich in fibre and Vitamin E, they may also reduce cholesterol.
Cashews are high in iron and zinc and may reduce blood pressure while macadamias contain more monounsaturated fat than any other nut.
Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium, an essential mineral that acts as an antioxidant and may reduce the risk of certain cancers.
Are organic nuts worth it?
We sell organic nuts, so of course, we’re going to say yes! But seriously, conventionally grown, non-organic nuts are sprayed with pesticides after they are picked and shelled, which are easily absorbed because of their high oil content.
The same goes for seeds, which are also treated with pesticides. So, in a nutshell (sorry!), it’s worth spending a little extra on organic nuts and seeds.
What are the health benefits of seeds?
Seeds are extremely nutritious and great sources of fibre. Some of our favourites include chia seeds, which are rich in Omega-3 fats, sesame seeds which can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress and pepitas (pumpkin seeds) which are high in zinc, iron and calcium.
How do you store nuts and seeds?
If you’re buying organic Australian nuts or organic seeds, you need to store them correctly. Bulk nuts and seeds can lose their freshness so we recommend putting them in a sealed container and placing them in the refrigerator, particularly if you live in a warm climate.
What are the best ways to eat nuts and seeds?
As well as a great snack eaten raw, nuts and seeds make a tasty addition to many recipes. Why not add some organic walnuts and chia seeds to this amazing crunchy choc granola? Or perhaps this chewy chocolate bark - featuring organic cashews and pistachios - gets your taste buds tingling?
This tasty walnut, spinach and herb pesto would be a delicious addition to pasta or scrambled eggs. Cashews combined with white and black sesame seeds to elevate carrots into a delicious side of dreams. Turmeric also turns these roasted macadamias into a sublime snack.
