As well as being more durable and hygienic, choosing a stainless steel lunchbox is better for your health, too. Some plastic lunch boxes and lunch bags can leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals into the food they come into contact with, even if they claim to be BPA-free.
Choosing an eco lunch box and containers made of stainless steel is also more sustainable because if you look after them properly, they could last a lifetime (and beyond!)
Keep foods extra fresh and tasty in your sustainable lunchbox by using separate pots and paper snack and sandwich bags inside the main container. It’s also important to keep food at the correct temperature, especially in kids’ lunch boxes where the food might be out of the fridge for a few hours until lunchtime. Put stainless steel containers into the freezer prior to packing, use insulated food containers to keep food hot or cold and, at the very least, pop an ice pack into your eco friendly lunch box.
Although stainless steel is resistant to corrosion, regular gentle cleaning is needed to preserve its appearance and the integrity of its surface. Wash by hand or in the dishwasher. If food is stuck to the surface, soak your sustainable lunch box in hot, soapy water before rinsing thoroughly.
Another gentle but effective way of removing deposits and stains is to apply a baking soda paste. Leave for half an hour and then rinse and dry.
If you’re bored with sandwiches, consider wraps, sushi or muffins. Why not try a salad like this hearty roasted pumpkin and lentil salad, or a pasta salad with artichokes and broad beans? If it’s colder, soups will be a winner at lunchtime. Try this Moroccan spiced sweet potato soup or this Indian-style mulligatawny soup and remember to transport it in a screw-top insulated jar to make sure it’s piping hot at lunchtime.
