Eco oral care: why you should use a bamboo toothbrush and organic toothpaste.
Why switch to a bamboo toothbrush?
With Aussies sending about 30 million plastic toothbrushes to landfill every year, it’s easy to see why choosing a more sustainable bamboo toothbrush is a no-brainer on the environmental front.
Single-use plastic toothbrushes take a staggering 1000 years to break down, whereas a biodegradable eco toothbrush made from a natural material like bamboo could break down in six months in a home composting system.

Bamboo is also a sustainable choice because it’s a fast-growing and self-generating plant (the average bamboo takes five years to grow compared to trees that may take up to 30 years to harvest) so deforestation isn't necessary either.
How do I dispose of a bamboo toothbrush?
Dentists recommend you replace your toothbrush regularly and a bamboo toothbrush is no different. You can prolong its life by making sure you rinse it well after each use and allowing it to dry properly.
When it’s time to dispose of your bamboo toothbrush, remove the plastic bristles with a pair of pliers or snap the entire head off before placing the bamboo handle in a composting bin. But if that’s not possible, it’s good to know that even if you throw it into landfill, it will still biodegrade in a few years.
What are the benefits of organic toothpaste?
Toothpaste is something we (should!) use at least twice a day, but have you ever wondered what’s in it? Conventional toothpaste contains artificial ingredients such as the surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), saccharin, dyes, parabens and propylene glycol, a synthetic liquid used to improve a product’s appearance and texture.
As your gums absorb whatever ingredients you put in your mouth, it makes sense to choose an organic toothpaste free from chemicals and harsh ingredients. By using natural flavourings like peppermint, lemon or star anise, organic natural toothpaste is also gentle on your teeth and gums and the environment.
