What are the health benefits of dried fruit?
Dried fruit is fruit (no surprises there!) which has had nearly all the water content removed. Common varieties include raisins, sultanas, apricots, cranberries, dates, figs and prunes. Santos Organics also sells the most delicious organic dried Bananas, Medjool Dates and Shredded Coconut.
Dry fruit is highly nutritious and is rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals. They’re also loaded with polyphenol antioxidants which improve blood flow, digestive health and reduce the risk of many diseases.
Raisins, for example, are packed with potassium and have been shown to lower blood pressure and improve blood sugar control, among other benefits.
Our biodynamic dried raisins (and sultanas) are not artificially preserved with sulfur dioxide, as most conventional brands are.
Is dried fruit healthy?
As we’ve mentioned, there are many health benefits to dried fruits. Take our organic Medjool dates which - as well as having a distinctive honey caramel flavour - are high in vitamin B3 and B5, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron.
However, it’s important to know that dried fruit is relatively high in calories and natural sugar including glucose and fructose. So, enjoy in moderation and watch your portion size.
Which dried fruit has the most fibre?
Although we’ve rightly been told to eat our prunes if we want to be, er, regular, the superstars in the dried fruit fibre stakes are actually Incaberries with a whopping 19g of fibre per 100g (they’re also high in antioxidants). Close runners up are dried figs (approx 14g of fibre per 100g).
And if you’re wondering which dry fruit has the least natural sugar content, incaberries score well here, too. No wonder they’ve been dubbed nature’s new super food.
