Description
Cacao is a good source of phytonutrients, beta-carotene, amino acids (tryptophan and phenylalanine), omega 3 EFA's, soluble fibre, calcium, copper, sulphur, potassium, magnesium, zinc and iron.
The Adandamine (the "bliss" chemical) and Phenylethylamine (PEA) found in cacao increase dopamine secretion (similar to when we fall in love) heightening feelings of pleasure, creativity, cognitive function and mood regulation.
Cacao may assist with magnesium deficiency, improve cardiovascular function, elevate mood, assist with weight loss (may suppress appetite) and detoxing due to anti-oxidant properties.
Research has found cacao beans may yield between 0 - 1000 parts per million of caffeine (less than 1/20th of the caffeine in conventional coffee). Cacao contains an abundance of Theobromine, a close chemical relative of caffeine. Theobromine is not a nervous system stimulant; however, it does dilate the blood vessels leading to that energised and happy feeling.
