Wildlife Save Havens and Wildbnb

Did you know that Santos Organics is a 100% environmental not-for-profit social enterprise? Every year we donate a portion of our profits to local organisations doing wonderful things for our local area. So every time you shop at Santos, you’re making a positive contribution to social and environmental projects!

One of the campaigns we supported in 2021 was Wildlife Safe Havens and their offshoot Wildbnb, whose mission is to create wildlife safe havens, wildlife corridors and support threatened species in their recovery.

What is Wildlife Safe Havens?

The Byron Shire has one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia, with many species of flora and fauna in need of protection and support. Run in partnership between Brunswick Valley Landcare and Wildbnb Wildlife Habitat, the Wildlife Safe Havens project is all about increasing habitat for vulnerable species.

Focusing on birds, mammals, reptiles and insects that depend on hollows for survival, the team behind the project is surveying and installing hollow boxes in strategic areas. This provides safe spaces for breeding, sleeping and shelter for those species that most need it.

Recent projects

In recent months the team behind the campaign have been surveying local habitat for hollow trees, and observing and analysing the presence and movements of target species. These species include Glossy Black Cockatoos, Greater Gliders and Large Forest Owls. There have been some exciting developments as part of these projects.

On a recent survey outing, the team was treated to a rare sighting - a female Greater Glider and her baby watching over them. Greater Gliders had not been seen in the area for 19 years, and then it was a single Glider. Needless to say it was an exciting development!

Additionally, nest boxes have now been installed for target species and audio + visual recording equipment has been installed, allowing for greater observation and analysis. 400-500 year old trees have also been discovered, providing hollow habitat to target species.

The work has also resulted in more questions being raised, which allows for more progress to be made. Even further investment has resulted from the findings of recent projects.

Santos Organics’ involvement

Santos Organics is proud to support this campaign, donating $25,000 to the cause. The use of these funds is twofold: creating hollow habitats for some key endangered precious wildlife species, and helping with associated costs of the projects.

The donation has allowed us to support the following threatened species in the Byron Shire, which were selected in consultation with leading local ecologists and NSW Saving our Species:

  • Glossy Black-Cockatoos
  • Greater Glider
  • Powerful Owl
  • Sooty Owl
  • Masked Owl
