Did you know that in Australia, the term 'organic' is not regulated as it is in the United States, Japan and China? In these countries, a product cannot have the word 'organic' on it unless it is certified by a third party certification body. In Australia, the only to know for sure a food is organic is check for the certification logo or to verify through the relevant certification agency's website.
Over the last 12 months, the Organic Development Group (ODG)—a body that comprises all certification bodies including SXC, NASAA, BDRI, OFC and AOL as well as consumers and major industry groups—has been lobbying for the legislation of the word 'organic', and the development of a combined peak industry body.
On 19th November, the National Organic Standard Bill was introduced into Parliament. If passed, the word 'organic' will become legislated meaning only producers & processors who are certified organic will be able to use the word 'organic' in their labelling and advertising.
The National Organic Standard Bill is a Private Members Bill which have notoriously low success rates. The ODG is calling for your assistance to help this historic legislation succeed by lobbying your local members, especially Labor & Greens members.
If you are passionate about supporting organic certification and the consumer protection it offers, there's no better time to have your say!
