Golden Turmeric Chai
Sipping on this golden brew that is bursting with the healing properties of turmeric may be more powerful than you think! Turmeric has potent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities that are said to reduce chronic inflammation and pain. As I drink this yellow chai, I imagine a golden glow spreading throughout my body and soothing everything on its way. Taking turmeric is thought to improve the oxygen uptake of the brain, and might help in some of the brain’s functions and processes. Turmeric has also shown some promising results in helping to lower cholesterol, detoxify and improve liver function, relieve rheumatoid arthritis and so much more! And this is just the tip of the mountain of information and research available about turmeric. It’s an amazing spice all round!

Ingredients:

  1. 60g fresh or frozen turmeric, diced
  2. 40g piece fresh ginger
  3. 1 cinnamon stick
  4. 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  5. 1 teaspoon freshly grated whole nutmeg
  6. 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
  7. 200ml coconut milk
  8. 500ml milk of your choice
  9. 250ml filtered water
  10. 1⁄4-1⁄2 cup coconut sugar, or to taste
  11. Extra water or milk of your choice, if needed
  12. Extra finely ground nutmeg, for dusting

Directions:

1. Place all the ingredients, except the finely ground nutmeg, in a blender and blend until smooth. 2. Pour into a large saucepan and bring almost to boiling point, then reduce the heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes. 3. Using a fine sieve or nut mylk bag, strain the cooking liquid into another large saucepan; discard the grounds. 4. Taste and adjust sweetener to your liking. (The flavour of fresh turmeric can vary in strength. 5. Add extra water or milk if the turmeric taste is too strong for you.) 6. Pour chai into mugs, dust with the extra ground nutmeg and enjoy with your favourite sweet treat in the winter’s sun.

Tip: The black pepper helps with the absorption of the turmeric.
