Preparation: Unlike many legumes Red Split Lentils need no pre-soaking as they are split into two halves, yet we still recommend rinsing the lentils prior to cooking to assure no debris are present. Red Split Lentils are by far the quickest and easiest to cook of the lentil family and become quite mushy making them ideal for purees, dhal, soups, stews and quick meals.
We recommend storing in an air tight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Organic Red Split Lentils have been part of man’s diet for over 4000 years! Remains of lentils have been found in Egyptian tombs and some murals which date back to 1200 BC. Therefore, lentils are said to be one of the first cultivated crops.
Split red lentils like most lentils are low in fat. Remember that combining lentils with a grain like Amaranth or Rice gives you complete protein meal mix. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, lentils have a neutral thermal nature and are beneficial to the heart, circulation, stimulate adrenal function and increases the vitality of the kidneys.
NOTE: Split red lentils do not require soaking.
