Certified organic medium grain brown rice in a 25kg bulk sack. The serious bulk buy for households, food businesses, and cafes that go through rice weekly.

Santos Organics Organic Medium Grain Brown Rice is a whole grain rice with the outer bran layer intact. That bran layer is what gives brown rice its characteristic slightly chewy texture, nutty flavour, and higher fibre content compared to white rice. Medium grain sits between short and long grain in length and stickiness: it holds its shape when cooked but has enough starch to cling together slightly, making it well suited to rice bowls, stir-fries, sushi, congee, and side dishes where you want a little more body than long grain provides.

The 25kg sack is the most cost-effective format Santos stocks, designed for households that cook rice daily, food businesses doing volume prep, and bulk buyers who want the best per-kilogram price on a pantry staple. At this scale, proper storage matters. See the storage section below.

Why people love it

  • Certified organic, whole grain with bran layer intact
  • Medium grain: slightly chewy, mildly sticky, versatile across Asian and Western cooking
  • Higher fibre than white rice, with a nuttier flavour
  • No additives, no fortification, nothing added
  • Naturally vegan, gluten free, and dairy free
  • 25kg bulk sack, best value per kilogram in the Santos rice range
  • Certification: [CERTIFIER REQUIRED BEFORE PUBLISHING, e.g. ACO Certified Organic]

How to cook it

Brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice and benefits from soaking first.

Basic stovetop method:

  1. Rinse well under cold water until water runs clear
  2. Optional but recommended: soak for 30 minutes to 8 hours, then drain and rinse again. Soaking reduces cooking time and improves texture
  3. Combine 1 cup rice with 2 to 2.5 cups water in a saucepan
  4. Bring to the boil, reduce heat to the lowest setting, cover tightly
  5. Cook for 35 to 45 minutes until water is absorbed
  6. Remove from heat, leave lid on for 10 minutes to steam through
  7. Fluff with a fork and serve

Rice cooker: use the brown rice setting if available, or add slightly more water than the white rice line and extend the cook cycle.

How to use it

  • Rice bowls: the slightly sticky texture holds toppings without sliding, ideal for Japanese-style donburi, Korean bibimbap, or grain bowls
  • Stir-fries: day-old cooked brown rice works especially well in fried rice, the drier texture stops it clumping
  • Congee: slow-cooked with extra water or broth into a thick, comforting porridge
  • Side dish: pairs with anything you'd serve with regular white rice, with more texture and a nuttier flavour
  • Meal prep: cooks in large batches and refrigerates well for 4 to 5 days. Suitable for freezing in portions

Storage

For a 25kg sack, proper storage is essential to preserve freshness and prevent moisture, pests, and oxidation of the bran oils. Brown rice has a shorter shelf life than white rice due to the natural oils in the bran layer.

  • Decant into food-grade airtight containers immediately after opening
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark location
  • Ideal storage temperature: below 20°C
  • Shelf life once opened: 3 to 6 months at room temperature, up to 12 months refrigerated or frozen
  • Keep away from strong-smelling foods as rice absorbs odours readily

For food businesses and cafes: store in sealed food-grade bins with lids. Label with the open date and rotate stock so older rice is used first.
