Santos Organics Organic Black Tahini is our own-brand unhulled tahini, made from certified organic black sesame seeds and milled into a smooth, rich paste in Australia. The seeds are left unhulled, which is what gives this tahini its deep, almost-black colour, its mineral content, and its slightly more intense flavour than the hulled white variety.

Black tahini is the moodier, more complex cousin of regular tahini. The flavour is earthier and more sesame-forward, with a darker, toastier note from the natural hull. It's the kind of ingredient that turns a basic salad dressing into something restaurant-worthy and a regular hummus into a striking, charcoal-coloured centrepiece.

Why people love it

  • One ingredient: certified organic unhulled black sesame seeds
  • Stone-ground in Australia from organic seed (Made in Australia from imported ingredients)
  • Rich source of plant-based protein, calcium, iron, and fibre
  • Naturally vegan, gluten free, and free from added sugar, salt, oil, or preservatives
  • 350g glass jar, fully recyclable
  • Shelf-stable, no refrigeration needed (though many people do)

How to use it

Black tahini works anywhere regular tahini does, with a deeper flavour and a much more dramatic colour. A few starting points:

  • Black hummus: swap in for regular tahini and serve with a swirl of olive oil and pomegranate seeds for a stunning party dip
  • Salad dressing: whisk with lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, and warm water for a quick tahini dressing that pairs beautifully with roasted carrots, beetroot, or kale
  • Drizzle: straight from the jar onto roasted vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, avocado toast, or grain bowls
  • Sauces and marinades: stir into miso, soy, and ginger for a Japanese-leaning dipping sauce, or into yoghurt and lemon for a Middle Eastern-style condiment
  • Sweet: swirl into oats, blend into smoothies, or use in place of nut butter in brownies, cookies, and energy balls. Black sesame is a classic flavour in Japanese desserts for a reason
  • As a spread: on toast with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup

Storage and use

Natural oil separation is normal and a sign of a real, additive-free tahini. Just give the jar a good stir before each use. Once opened, store in a cool dry pantry, or in the fridge if you prefer (it will thicken when chilled, just stir or warm gently to loosen).
