Why Organic?

We are grateful that here in the Byron Shire the environmental and health benefits of organic food are pretty well common knowledge. But what does Certified Organic actually mean? Click here to find out more…

In brief, it is simply better for the health of plants, ecosystems, waterways, animals and yes you guessed it, humans too. And we are not persuaded by the chemical agriculture and GM organisations bluff – that they are needed to “feed the world.” Clever and powerful marketing, but complete and utter nonsense.

There is already enough food to feed the world,  a lot is just being wasted, and over the long term (as many studies show) regenerative organic systems actually produce higher yields! They choose to create living systems, rather than dead systems that rely on ongoing unnatural inputs – obviously 100% unsustainable! It’s that simple, it’s proven many times over and even the World Health Organisation’s Agriculture Department states ‘small scale organic systems’ are the systems of the future…. and yes we totally agree and we support that path!

Really it’s pretty obvious that minimising the input of manufactured chemicals into our body or our environment means our bodies and the environment can continue to operate the way they have for thousands if not millions of years. It’s not rocket science, it’s just common sense. The reasons for a rise in mental and physical health conditions are not that hard to decipher really. Unhealthy food, an unhealthy environment and a disconnection to our physical body are all parts of equation. So what to do? Easy! Make a change – eat organic, eat healthy, get moving your body and purchase food with us, where your food funds environmental projects. We make the choice very very simple.

Why Local?

Well, this is a huge discussion with so many factors that matter, and it’s pretty well complicated. We could write essays on essays about supporting local economies,  or you could simply follow the work (and essays!) of Local Futures who are building a wonderful conscious community around the world.
And we would totally recommend watching The Economics of Happiness. It’s an amazingly insightful and powerful film.

So you can trust us, you can do you research and you can look around in your community and question yourself as to why you wouldn’t support your local producers, who also happen to be your neighbours. Money stays in your local economy, there are less transport miles, it stimulates local employment and the environment benefits, too! Or you can check out this nifty picture.

What is Clean Food?

Beyond organic and local as possible clean food is the way food is meant to be. Free from unnecessary and often harmful additives and preservatives. Free from synthetic chemicals, petrochemicals, parabens, artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Free from refined sugars, flours or other processed ingredients which may be considered harmful to health. If it’s not in the interest of quality or health then we just won’t serve it.

We also won’t stock any food that the growing, harvesting and processing is contentious in where and how it is done. That’s why we won’t stock any multinationals products unless their ethical accountability has been certified by a third party (ie. certified Fair Trade). History tells us that the way multinationals operate in developing countries is problematic and detrimental for many reasons. We do not support any genetic or technical intervention in food either. It’s not the way nature intended and the unknown health implications combined with the known environmental problems steers us clear from this dirty practice.

We do not irradiate food or buy food containing irradiated ingredients. We’ve done the research on importation and essentially if a food gets irradiated it will not meet organic standards and we won’t stock it.

We choose products with minimal packaging, with a preference for food wrapped in biodegradable or compostable packaging, rather than snack or convenience size products. We want to minimise our collective footprint of the pollution we create through our food.
