A $9,000 Santos Organics Grant was awarded to support Sea Shepherd Australia’s Marine Debris Campaign in 2019, and the grant directly funded a marine and plastic debris clean-up of Moreton Island in September 2019.
The clean-up was attended by ten Sea Shepherd volunteers from around Australia and the project was a great success with the team removing over one tonne of rubbish from the 21km beach line. The clean-up was instrumental in protecting marine life from plastic pollution, especially vulnerable ocean wildlife such as green turtles, dugongs, seabirds and dolphins. A range of items found during the clean-up included: plastic bottles and bottle caps, cigarette butts and lighters, hard plastic pieces and soft plastic remnants, cyalume fishing glow sticks, toothbrushes, rubber thongs and balloons – items that really have no place in our beautiful ocean!
