Which is Australia’s healthiest cooking oil?
Oil comes in many forms but not all are created equal. There are myriad varieties out there with varying culinary uses and nutritional values. What’s important to consider is their make-up of unhealthy saturated fat vs. healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
Topping the healthiest cooking oil charts is extra virgin olive oil (or EVOO for short). EVOO is the least processed olive oil and is high in monounsaturated fat and a source of antioxidants. It’s also an excellent all-rounder which can be used for cooking as well as salad dressings.
Also consider avocado oil which has a similar fatty acid profile to EVOO.
Which is the best cooking oil for frying?
The key to picking the best Australian cooking oil is understanding smoke point. This is the temperature at which the oil starts to burn (and probably sets the smoke alarm off, too!)Although it’s often said that vegetable or canola oil is best for frying, olive oil has a smoke point of somewhere between 190c and 207c. This makes it a safe choice for most cooking methods, including pan-frying.
Can I use coconut oil as a moisturiser?
Coconut oil is one of the best tasting oils for use in baked goods like choc cherry balls and choc peanut butter fudge.
It can also be used in skincare, especially if you have dry or flaky skin. Organic coconut oil contains nourishing fatty acids such as linoleic acid (Vitamin F) and lauric acid that help hydrate and protect the skin.
However, those with skins prone to break-outs should only use it occasionally as it can block pores.
How do you store oil and vinegar?
If you’re buying bulk vegetable oil, other oils, or vinegar online, you need to store it correctly. All our oil and vinegar is sent in plastic bottles for safety during transit. Once they arrive, we recommend transferring them into a sealed dark glass bottle and storing in a pantry or cupboard.
How do you make a vinaigrette dressing?
Although it sounds pretty fancy, using oil and vinegar to make a vinaigrette dressing for salads is a cinch. The standard ratio for vinaigrettes is three parts oil to one part vinegar but be flexible depending on your taste (add more vinegar to make a tart dressing or more oil to make it richer). One of our favourites is a roasted red pepper vinaigrette. It features olive oil, red wine vinegar, and the added twist of red pepper, garlic, and dried herbs. Delicious!
